New
Construction Defect: Missing Tiedown/Connectors
The
photo above shows brand new roof framing that was never
properly installed by the framer
and never enforced by the County Building Inspector. The
rafter was simply "toe-nailed" in place
without. Transition rafters such as this require tiedown / connector
straps to wrap over the top of the rafter toe, cut through the
roof sheathing and connect to a structural framing member
(truss) below.

The
photo to the left shows a wider view of the same home
under construction. The yellow arrow points to one
rafter out of eight that had a tiedown strap installed.

The
photo to the left shows the underside view of the
tiedown strap from the photo above. As
required, a hole has been cut through the roof
sheathing (decking) and the tiedown / connector strap
has been pulled through. However, the strap has
not been connected to the structure -- nails have not
been driven through the strap, and the strap has not
been bent to wrap under the bottom of the wooden truss
cord. |

Unfortunately,
this is one of many defects that were uncovered by a New
Construction Inspection. Construction defects such as this are a common occurrence that
often go uncorrected.
These
photos were taken by a Guardian home inspector during an
inspection of a new home that was recently completed.
